Before committing to any strategy on this page, it is worth knowing how the most-repeated NFL betting angles have actually performed. We ran each one against the complete nflverse game log bundled with this site — 7,276 completed games, 1999–2025. The bar that matters is 52.4%, the break-even rate at standard −110 pricing.
| The claim you hear | Sample | What the data says | Clears the vig? |
|---|---|---|---|
| “Teams off a bye cover more” | 735 games | Off-bye side covered 50.6% | No |
| “Home teams cover on Thursday night” | 329 games | Thursday hosts covered 51.3% | No |
| “Take home underdogs” | 2,418 games | Home dogs covered 50.2% | No |
| “Division dogs know the opponent” | 2,726 games | Division dogs covered 52.1% (vs. 50.8% for other dogs) | Not quite |
| “Big dogs (+7 or more) are live” | 2,202 games | Covered 51.8%, won outright 20.3% | No |
| “Wind kills the over” | 684 outdoor games, wind ≥15 mph | Over hit just 43.0% — but the market already set those totals 1.3 points lower than calm-day games | See note |

The wind row deserves the asterisk: unders really did hit 57% in high wind, which is the one angle in the table that would have cleared the vig historically. But books already shade windy totals downward, forecasts are public, and 684 games is small enough that the edge could be a fraction of what it looks like. Treat it as the strongest of a weak field, not a free lunch. The honest summary of the whole table: label-based angles are priced in. Every famous situational edge sits within about two points of a coin flip.
If the famous angles are dead, what is left? Three things that show up consistently in the same game log, none of which is a pick:
The guides below go deeper on each. Where a page makes a factual claim about NFL history, the number is computed from the bundled game log, and we say so next to the table.
The guides above are self-contained, but they build on each other. If you are working through them deliberately, this order front-loads the ideas that protect your money:
Skipping straight to the exotic markets is the standard path, and the expensive one: every measured number in the table above says the selection edges are tiny, which makes the structural habits — price, size, scorekeeping — most of what a recreational bettor can actually control.
